The Engine Room

The Engine Room is part of registered charity Somerset Film. Our mission statement is to make film and digital media skills and facilities as widely accessible as possible in Somerset – and to pursue excellence and innovation in all we do.

We are fast approaching our tenth year of operation at the Engine Room, originally conceived as a three-year experiment! We are delighted to still be here, and to be in rude health! We look forward over the next couple of years to work with our friends and supporters to take the Engine Room to the next level, building on the security afforded by our 99 year lease to create a new and enhanced centre for creativity and communication, Engine Room 2.0

Facilities and Equipment Hire
We offer studio space and a comprehensive range of equipment for hire at competitive rates: from cameras, microphones and lights for film and digital media work to projectors, vision mixers and screens for presentation and exhibitions.

We’re constantly updating the equipment we’re able to provide, new additions include Micro Pro Lite panels – LED lights and LCD camera monitor for use with cameras, slide-scanner, mini jib and a flatscreen 32” TV.

Current hirers of our studio and cafe space include Core / Somerset Design Enterprise Network and Somerset Racial Equality Council.

We are passionate about passing skills on and can provide bespoke training packages for your organization from £350 per day (max. six people on some activities).
We can help you and your colleagues to:
• Document your activities more effectively through digital photography or moving image
• Use social media within your organisation or gain inside knowledge to help clients use it safely and effectively
• Build digital media skills so that you can provide resources for clients internally e.g. training films, e-bulletins
• Develop team-work and communication skills through creative activities

Most recently we have supported:
• Next Step Volunteer Bureau, to explore the application of social media within their organisation
• Somerset Community Food, training staff and volunteers in filmmaking to create online training clips
• Yarlington Housing Association Group, showing clients and volunteers how to use the Internet and social media to improve their chances of employment
• Chard Intentional Peer Support, training volunteers and group members in filmmaking to document their activities

From Animation to Wordpress, we have the expertise and facilities to help you keep pace. Please email us at if you’d like us to design a course for you.
