'Nether Nettle Thong' - What's In a Name?

Art and design collective launch a free pop-up art exhibition showcasing new work inspired by West Yorkshire’s peculiar place names.

Huddersfield based collective ‘Out Of Hours’ are inviting the public to the opening of their latest exhibition ‘Show Two’. The collective will take over the top floor of Bates Mill from the evening of Friday 24th until Sunday 26th October, presenting new work, interactive installations and free activities for families as part of the Big Draw.

‘Show Two’ presents a new body of work from each artist, incorporating drawing, design, sculpture and sound installation, with the work created in response to the often unusual place names found across West Yorkshire. Visitors will also be invited to create their own artwork to take away, using the group’s ‘Place Name Generator’, made especially for the show. Families are invited to join the fun when the collective hosts free arts workshops throughout the weekend as part of the Big Draw, the national celebration of drawing run by the Campaign for Drawing.

The collective was formed in 2013 with the aim of hosting interesting art events in the Huddersfield area, as well as providing a creative outlet for its individual members outside of their regular professional practices. They held their inaugural exhibition in September 2013 at Moll Springs Mill, an old silk-dying works and stonemason’s studio in Netherton, Huddersfield. For their latest exhibition the group continue with their use of Huddersfield’s industrial spaces, this time expanding their ambitions to take on the impressive 3,500 sq. ft. loft space at Bates Mill.

Opening hours: Friday 24th October, 6pm – 10pm
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th October, 10am – 4pm

Address: Bates Mill, Colne Road, Huddersfield, HD1 3AG.
