Rangoli art at the Old Vicarage, Leigh

Rangoli art at the Old Vicarage, Leigh

Diwali, the festival of light celebrated in many Asian communities in UK and elsewhere, is a wonderful blend of story, philosophy, visual and performance art. Here, Ann Hinchliffe (blue suit) works with residents of The Old Vicarage, Leigh, using flame-coloured rosettes and LED candles to create a Rangoli-style pattern. This became the backdrop for a retelling of the central Rama and Sita story, and chair-based dance using dandia sticks. More than one person taking part offered comments from their own experience of living in India or Sri Lanka, or compared the sticks to English morris dancing.
