Maypole plaiting at Wincanton Day Centre "Live at Home" group

Maypoles with woven ribbons have been part of English dance tradition for over a century, and older adults often have rich memories of them from their school days. The maypole is a stage set in itself, a space-shaper, a basic art-form infinitely adaptable to the people taking part. Here, people with limited mobility maintain the static ribbon network, as important to the pattern as the ribbons being lifted up and down. Live music from the concertina (played by Ann Hinchliffe) guides and is guided by the dancers' footsteps.
