Whistler v Ruskin: 'A Pot of Paint in the Public's Face'

Whistler v Ruskin: 'A Pot of Paint in the Public's Face'

Lecture by Lizzie Darbyshire at 7.15pm. (Doors open 6.30pm)
When the artist Whistler displayed his Nocturne in Black and Gold: the Falling Rocket at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877, the revered art critic John Ruskin accused him of 'flinging a pot of paint in the public's face' and of asking 200 guineas for the privilege! The allegation led to one of the most renowned libel cases of the 19th century. This lecture explores the personalities and intriguing stories surrounding the Whistler v. Ruskin trial.
