About Creative Kirklees
For a long time, Kirklees has had a reputation as a creative place. We have a wealth of talented individuals, groups and creative companies in the area.
Kirklees Council was one of the first local authorities to support its creative sector and to recognise the sector’s valuable contribution to the local economy. Here in Kirklees we also know that the arts and creative sectors help raise aspirations and confidence, improve our wellbeing, enable us to explore ideas, realise our full potential and build healthy, cohesive communities.
Most of all, people have a basic need to be creative and enjoy participating in and/or experiencing the arts.
When we were developing a strategy to enable the creative sector to further grow and affect our lives, one of the issues which came up during consultation was that there are some great artists and arts events in Kirklees but we do not shout about them. People wanted to engage with the arts but did not know where to go. Artists wanted to be able to widen the markets for their work but needed support to do this and promote their work on a global stage. Hence the idea for Creative Kirklees was born.
